For聽贬叠鲍听Senior聽Director of Visual Arts,聽Professor of Art and聽Artist-In-Residence (Painting)聽Michael Roque Collins, instruction in art flows naturally out of his love for translating his聽vision聽onto canvases.
He particularly relishes聽the opportunity to teach students in a Christian setting聽at HBU.聽鈥淚t鈥檚 an honor to teach here,鈥� Collins said. 鈥淒oing painting is kind of like prayer. It鈥檚 about faith, hope, life and about hope winning out over fear.鈥�
Collins draws revelation from the scenes of nature, and from the life cycles found in both biology and human culture.聽His latest collection, entitled 鈥淚nland Mountain Journey,鈥� was聽recently聽displayed in the distinguished聽LewAllen聽Galleries of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Kenneth R. Marvel, galley owner, described the聽collection聽as 鈥渁 product of a remarkable interplay of the conscious and subconscious interacting to produce radiant visual poetry.鈥�
Through the use of oil on linen and mixed media on photographs, Collins creates scenes that are聽part-realism and part-fancy.聽The artwork of Collins appears at once antique and modern. It is timeless perhaps because it addresses the immemorial nature and experience common to humanity.
Collins, along with each of his art faculty colleagues,聽continues to practice his fine art forms聽while teaching students.聽Solo exhibitions聽like Inland Mountain Journey聽are emblematic of how聽HBU art instructors聽professionally聽excel.聽As with all top MFA and BFA programs,聽students are inspired by professional聽artistic聽application.
The聽Studio聽Visual Arts programs聽of聽HBU have been designed to mix all levels of proficiency;聽students are witnesses and practitioners聽of聽the聽process聽that studio聽visual聽art聽mediums require in order to create art at聽the highest聽levels. The sharing of creative ideas between students聽and faculty,聽and the聽heightened sense of discourse聽allowed聽by faculty maintaining small on-campus studios聽(in addition to larger off-campus main studios),聽make聽an ideal聽learning聽environment. Moreover,聽fine arts聽students gain confidence in their ability to聽formulate聽their own聽art that arises from聽spiritual contemplation.
