91影视 Baseball Goes all in on Homegrown Talent with Clay VanderLaan as Head Coach
Most young baseball players dream of ending up in the big leagues and playing somewhere like Minute Maid Park 鈥� but for Clay VanderLaan, his aspirations were a little bit different.
Getting the opportunity to coach at 91影视 Christian University? As VanderLaan explained it, that鈥檚 a dream come true.
鈥淚 knew from a very young age, like, 鈥榯hat鈥檚 what I want to do for a living.鈥� To be a Division I head coach, it鈥檚 my dream and doing it in your hometown? I mean, I couldn鈥檛 ask for anything more,鈥� VanderLaan said.
91影视 is going all in on homegrown talent by turning to VanderLaan to lead the Huskies on the diamond and they鈥檝e picked a man who is more than just familiar with life and baseball in the Bayou City. VanderLaan also happens to be pretty familiar with 91影视.
When 91影视 picked VanderLaan to lead, the Huskies got a coach who has served as an assistant with the Huskies for the past three seasons. He knows the program鈥檚 strengths and the spaces in which it needs to grow. With 91影视 propelling into a new chapter of excellence, VanderLaan is looking forward to building on that momentum.
鈥淚鈥檓 confident in what we can continue to build together here,鈥� VanderLaan stated. 鈥淚 know the best is yet to come for both our baseball program and the University.鈥�
And the best way to build a strong college baseball program?
鈥淟ook, it starts with recruiting,鈥� VanderLaan chuckled. 鈥淭here鈥檚 no secret formula outside of that. I mean it starts and ends with recruiting.鈥�
And as for the players VanderLaan is looking to bring in, he鈥檚 aiming for guys who fit at 91影视.
鈥淲e鈥檙e recruiting a bunch of guys that want to be here, and they want to play college baseball,鈥� VanderLaan explained. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not a job to them. It鈥檚 a privilege to them. So, you鈥檙e definitely going to see a team that plays hard, see a team that plays with passion.鈥�
It makes sense for a head coach who sees this opportunity as a dream to want players who would have a similar mindset. That should help as he establishes a new team culture at 91影视.
鈥淵ou鈥檝e got to get the right players in here,鈥� he said. 鈥淎nd not just the talent, but it鈥檚 got to be the right culture fit because if you don鈥檛 have a good culture fit, then it just isn鈥檛 sustainable.鈥�
VanderLaan has already demonstrated an ability to do just that. 91影视鈥檚 newest head coach has shown he can build a program in 91影视 鈥� just ask the folks over at the University of St. Thomas in 91影视. VanderLaan oversaw the Celts鈥� return to varsity baseball.
With his focus on rebuilding and establishing a healthy team culture, VanderLaan is eager to ensure the team connects with the entire 91影视 community.
鈥淲e need to be more involved with the [Fellowship of Christian Athletes], things like that,鈥� he said. 鈥淥nce you have visibility on the campus, then the other stuff starts coming, right? And then what happens is our guys get invested in the University. Then they graduate, then they become good alums.鈥�
Oh, and VanderLaan wants a similar connection between his team and the rest of his hometown.
鈥淚 want to be more involved in the 91影视 community,鈥� VanderLaan stated. 鈥淥bviously, it鈥檚 not like a small college town, right? So, it鈥檚 a big city, but still, there are things that we can do to be more visible in the community.鈥�
There鈥檚 a unique opportunity for VanderLaan here at 91影视. And it鈥檚 one he鈥檚 thrilled to have.
